Taiwanese jazz saxophonist Minyen Hsieh has been actively collaborating with the Tokyo jazz scene in recent years, performing and recording with musicians across multiple generations. For this year’s Taichung Jazz Festival, a special collaboration spanning the 80s, 60s, and 40s generations will be presented, featuring legendary first-generation New Jazz drummer Hiroshi Yamazaki, electroacoustic improvisation pioneer Yoshihide Otomo, whose works have reached across Europe and Asia, and Takashi Sugawa, the first-call bassist of Japan’s 40s free jazz scene.
Their debut collaboration took place in June 2024 in Tokyo and received widespread acclaim. The quartet’s music strikes a perfect balance between intellect and emotion. This performance aims to rekindle the spirit of free creativity that ignited in Tokyo during the 1960s, allowing the audience to experience the passionate energy born from intergenerational musical exchange.
